Profile
東京生まれ。聖心女子大学卒業後、広告代理店・電通に入社し、マーケティング、コーポレート・アイデンティティ、広報を担当し、長野冬季オリンピックや、国連機関と連携した国際プロジェクトに携わる。
1998年、米国コロンビア大学国際公共政策大学院（SIPA）にて修士号を取得。企業の社会的責任（CSR）を専攻。
これまで日米を中心に、企業の社会的責任（CSR）、SDGs（持続可能な開発目標）、社会起業など、ビジネスと社会のあり方を変えるテーマについて、コンサルティング、アドバイザリー、講演、ワークショップなどを行ってきた。SBI大学院大学MBAをはじめ、複数の大学で20年以上にわたり、CSR、SDGs、社会起業などを教えている。
現在は、ギフト・エコノミー（人がそれぞれの才能や資源を与え合う経済）、女性や次世代のエンパワーメント、ウェルビーイングを主なテーマとして活動している。南カリフォルニアのオーガニック農園での生活や、がんを患った弟の介護経験をきっかけに、食、健康、代替医療などにも関心を広げてきた。
元・東京大学大学院発「人間の安全保障フォーラム」理事、Sailors for the Sea Japan理事、目黒区環境審議専門委員会委員。 また、米国で不動産エージェントとして活動し、自身の米国および海外での不動産投資経験を生かしている。
人生のおよそ半分を日本で、半分を海外、主に米国とオーストラリアで過ごしてきた。一人娘の母。
著書・訳書は8冊。『社会起業家―社会責任ビジネスの新しい潮流』（岩波新書）、『被災地から日本をよくする100の方法―ギフト・エコノミーの幕開け』（NHK出版）、『ソーシャルビジネス入門』（日経BP）などがある。 著書については Books を参照。
最近のプロジェクト
2026年9月より、毎日新聞英語ウェブ版 The Mainichi にて、“The Waymaker: Michiko Toyama across Three Worlds” を連載。
祖母である外山道子（1912–2006）は、日本の作曲家と音響研究者、日本と西洋という複数の世界を横断した先駆者であった。
このプロジェクトの原点は約30年前、祖母との会話を録音し始めたことに遡る。近年は、パリ、バーゼル、ニューヨーク、東京、大阪などで資料調査を重ね、各地に散在していた記録をたどりながら、その生涯と業績を再構築している。 同時に、外山道子の生き方に着想を得た The Waymakers を立ち上げ、音楽、科学、イノベーションの分野で新しい道を切り拓く女性たちを支援する活動を進めている。
その根底にあるのは、ひとつのシンプルな考えである。
「一人が道を切り拓けば、その道は次の人のための道になる。」

Profile
Born in Tokyo, Maki Saito graduated from the University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo, before joining Dentsu, one of Japan’s leading advertising agencies, where she worked in marketing, and public relations for the Nagano Winter Olympics, as well as international projects carried out in collaboration with United Nations organizations.
In 1998, she earned a master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), where she focused on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
For more than two decades, Saito has worked in Japan and the United States on issues at the intersection of business and society, including Corporate Social Responsibility, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and social entrepreneurship. Her work has included consulting, advisory services, lectures, and workshops. She has also taught these subjects for more than 20 years in the MBA program at SBI Graduate School and at other universities.
Her current interests center on the Gift Economy, the idea of creating value by sharing our individual gifts and resources, as well as the empowerment of women and the next generation. Her experience living on an organic farm in Southern California and caring for her brother during his battle with cancer also led her to explore food, health, alternative medicine, and related approaches to well-being.
She has served as a board member of the Human Security Forum, an initiative originating at the University of Tokyo; as a board member of Sailors for the Sea Japan; and as a member of an environmental advisory committee for Meguro City, Tokyo.
Saito is also a real estate agent in the United States and draws on more than 15 years of personal real estate investment experience in the U.S. and abroad.
She has spent roughly half of her life in Japan and half abroad, primarily in the United States and Australia. She is the proud mother of one daughter.
She is the author and translator of eight books, including Social Entrepreneurs: A New Wave in Socially Responsible Business (Iwanami Shinsho), 100 Ways to Make Japan Better from the Disaster-Affected Areas: The Dawn of the Gift Economy (NHK Publishing), and Introduction to Social Business (Nikkei BP).
Current Work
Since September 2026, Saito has been writing “The Waymaker: Michiko Toyama across Three Worlds” for The Mainichi, the English-language edition of the Mainichi Shimbun.
The series tells the story of her grandmother, Michiko Toyama (1912–2006), a Japanese composer, acoustics researcher, and pioneer whose life crossed the worlds of music, science, technology, Japan, and the West.
The project began nearly thirty years ago, when Saito started recording conversations with her grandmother. In recent years, her research has taken her to archives and collections in Paris, Basel, New York, Tokyo, and Osaka, gradually bringing together the scattered pieces of Toyama’s life and work.
Alongside the column, Saito has launched The Waymakers, a project inspired by Toyama’s life and dedicated to supporting women who are forging new paths in music, science, and innovation.
At the heart of both projects is a simple idea:
When one person finds a way through, a path begins to appear for others.
